“The world exists all around us; it is up to us to be curious and brave and go on to discover it,” said Zoe Wachsman.
Zoe is studying animal and poultry sciences with a minor in agribusiness and entrepreneurship in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Her curiosity shapes her experience of the world, from her everyday interactions to her career path.
It led her to follow her passion for animal science to Virginia Tech, over 800 miles from her home, despite chronic health challenges. Her curiosity also helped her find an ever-growing community here, as she continuously seeks new opportunities to learn and connect.
“Zoe is relentless in her pursuit for experiences,” said her nominator. “Her active involvement across campus highlights her wide range of interests and her insatiable desire to learn.”
Zoe excels in her field of study. She works closely with her advisor and other faculty members in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to expand her involvement in the department wherever possible. In the classroom, her compassionate curiosity fosters environments of openness and support. Her passion for helping others led her to become a mentor to other students in her program.
Zoe said, “I want students to know that they can do anything, despite the obstacles they face. We all face challenges, but it is the courage to be curious and kind that pushes us through.”
Outside of the classroom, she gains hands-on agricultural experience through her activity in livestock shows for the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
As an intern in Sustainable Dining, Zoe’s curiosity and genuine interest in people has strengthened the team's relationships with departmental leaders, contributing to effective collaboration and a shared sense of responsibility in common goals.
“Zoe’s outcomes in this role exhibit how her curiosity can lead to real-world benefits for the campus community,” said her nominator. “Her efforts to push sustainable initiatives, at work and in her personal life, promote proper environmental management and encourage others to think critically about their impact on campus.”
As president and membership coordinator for Sigma Alpha Sorority, her curiosity creates an environment of growth, collaboration, and innovation. Her welcoming demeanor and instinct for mentorship help members engage, thrive, and grow.
Whether she is in class, among friends, or serving her community through her leadership roles, Zoe’s presence empowers others to share their ideas to engage in meaningful dialogue.
Zoe said, “Everyone around me inspires my curiosity, especially my mentors across campus and beyond. Each person has a unique story of their ‘why.’ I want to support, appreciate, and know that uniqueness which pushes me to remain curious.”
After graduation, Zoe hopes to attend a graduate program in public health. She plans to work in public service with a focus on the intersection of agriculture and public health in Appalachia.
For embracing the unknown to better understand and serve those around her, Student Affairs is proud to present the Aspire! Award for Commit to Unwavering Curiosity to Zoe Wachsman.
