Thomas Feely

Thomas Feely said, “Civility, to me, means showing respect and acting with decorum. Some of the folks I love to engage with the most are those who share different opinions, because when we talk, we are seeking to understand.”

Thomas is a student leader, a member of the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad, and the Board of Visitors Undergraduate Representative. He has also served in a leadership role for the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets.

Across all of his roles, Thomas establishes connections with students, faculty, staff, and leadership. He is committed to learning about issues within the student body and how he can better support his community.

“He does not shy away from discourse but instead thrives in the ability to learn more and engage with others,” said his nominator. “He exceeds usual expectations of civility through absolute devotion to respect and service towards his peers.”

Thomas continuously learns from everyone he meets by bringing a curiosity mindset to his conversations. Two of his favorite questions to ask are “Can you help me understand ... ?” and “Have you considered ... ?” He noted, “Recognizing that everyone has value and something for each of us to learn from is critical to a civil society.”

Through his roles, Thomas established a student advisory group for the Board of Visitors to give students a platform to share their thoughts and opinions in a respectful and engaging environment. He also contributed to a panel for student leaders to learn about fostering relationship-rich environments to give all students a meaningful experience in college.

Thomas said, “It has been tremendous to be able to interface with motivated students with different perspectives to learn what makes Virginia Tech home for them. I also enjoy the ability to highlight the challenges students face so that attention and resources can be directed toward closing the gaps.”

His nominator said, “It is evident through his leadership practices that he is dedicated to engaging with students and bringing their opinions, feedback, thoughts, and ideas to the forefront of the university to ensure every student voice is respected and heard.”

Thomas is a senior studying construction engineering and management in the College of Engineering. After graduation, he will work as a civilian for the Department of War.

For his unfailing commitment to serving his community, Student Affairs is proud to present the Aspire! Award for PRACTICE CIVILITY to Thomas Feely.
