Thiviya Karuppasamy
For Thiviya Karuppasamy, embracing Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) as a way of life starts with empathy.
She said, “Ut Prosim to me means not only serving my community, but intentionally getting to know the individuals within it. It’s important to me to meet people where they are and understand their particular needs and wants. There’s no one-size-fits-all community service.”
She is passionate about making things easier for others, whether that means making systems more efficient, helping improve access to resources, or just being a shoulder to lean on.
Thiviya said, “I’m most motivated by doing things that could benefit others – even if it’s just one person.”
Her commitment to helping others shines through her involvement in Science Olympiad at Virginia Tech, an undergraduate student-run service organization that brings STEM-related education activities to K-12 students in Southwest Virginia. She started volunteering with the organization as a first-year student and now serves as president and executive board member.
A nominator said, “Thiviya has been invaluable as an officer of Science Olympiad at Virginia Tech. She has always been extremely driven, given helpful input in meetings, and is incredibly dedicated to our organization’s mission of serving our community through STEM education.”
Across all her roles, Thiviya persists in giving help wherever it’s needed. Her nominator said she is “an inspiration and a critical component” to the many communities she serves.
As an ambassador for the Office of Undergraduate Research, Thiviya exceeds all expectations of her role. Her nominator described her as a “constant presence” who volunteers her time beyond requirements and extends her service into the summer and winter semesters.
She has completed countless impactful class presentations and led engaging tabling events. Her nominator credits her with getting dozens — if not hundreds — of students involved in research.
Thiviya said, “It’s so special to be a part of someone’s journey in discovering what they’re truly interested in and want to do for the rest of their lives. Seeing their eyes light up gives me a sense of purpose and makes me feel right at home.”
Thiviya is also an advocate for students on the Office of Undergraduate Research advisory board, where her passion and care for others make her a pillar of the program. Other ambassadors frequently turn to her for guidance on time management, improving their research skills, and better understanding their role as ambassadors.
Working with the Office of Undergraduate Research and several health sciences departments, Thiviya builds community through events that help all students become comfortable in research environments.
Thiviya has also served as a volunteer project coordinator for the Orion Living Learning Community and an ambassador for the Virginia Tech Public Health Program.
A senior studying microbiology in the College of Science and public health in the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, Thiviya plans to pursue a career in higher education that combines research and student services to help others follow their passions and scientific pursuits.
For using her wisdom, guidance, and empathy to help others succeed, Student Affairs is proud to present the Aspire! Award for EMBRACE UT PROSIM AS A WAY OF LIFE to Thiviya Karuppasamy.
