“In a position that often places her at the forefront of challenging situations, Tammy Conley embodies the essence of civility, reinforcing the values of respect, courtesy, and constructive engagement that are central to the Virginia Tech community,” said her nominator.

Tammy is the evening and nighttime housekeeping supervisor for Student Affairs Facilities and Operations.

Beyond routine supervision, Tammy’s work includes addressing the immediate aftermath of incidents arising from mechanical and human issues.

Her work corresponds with the residence halls’ most active hours, when some students may make poor decisions that impact their community and shared spaces.

“Tammy’s approach to these incidents is grounded in civility, characterized by a profound sense of responsibility, patience, and understanding,” said her nominator.

In situations that are embarrassing or stressful for those involved, she responds with patience and empathy. She helps students understand that while we are all responsible for our own actions, accidents do happen. In situations that call for a more disciplined approach, Tammy emphasizes the importance of accountability.

Her nominator said, “Her ability to engage with students — who may be embarrassed, frustrated, or resistant — is a testament to her strength of character. She balances firmness with empathy, channeling her nurturing instincts to convey expectations clearly and effectively.

“This is particularly evident in her direct communication with students, where she sets boundaries firmly yet compassionately, ensuring they understand the consequences of their actions while also providing the support needed to correct those actions.

“Her respectful yet clear communication teaches them the importance of accountability and the value of treating others with kindness and consideration, even in difficult situations.”

The nominator noted that Tammy’s impact is especially significant in a university setting, as many students are still learning how to be responsible adults. The care she exercises in sensitive situations helps students understand civility and respect on a personal level.

Tammy’s passion for serving her community is matched by her strong work ethic. She and her team maintain a clean, safe environment for students, while modeling dignity and civility.

Tammy’s influence has created a supportive work environment rooted in mutual respect. Her ability to handle challenging situations with grace and composure fosters a culture where her team feels valued and empowered to meet the high standards Tammy sets through her example.

“Tammy’s civility contributes to a broader culture of consideration and respect across campus,” said the nominator. “By consistently embodying and reinforcing these values, she helps create an environment where civility is the norm, not the exception. Tammy’s commitment to civility plays a vital role in cultivating a campus culture where everyone is encouraged to live and learn with respect and consideration for one another.”

For building a stronger community through her compassion, care, and civil engagement, Student Affairs is proud to present the Aspire! Award for Practice CIVILITY to Tamathy Conley.
