Sydney Cole

For Sydney Cole, civility is all about listening and really hearing what others have to say.

She said, “I love to hear people first in any conversation and offer them the chance to give their own authentic response without filtering it based on what I might say. No matter how tough a conversation may be, each person has the right to be heard. In a world where there is so much noise, having someone who earnestly listens to you is one of the most respectful things you can do.”

In her sorority, Pi Beta Phi, Sydney served as Director of Member Conduct, Vice President for Member Experience, and Chapter President.

It wasn’t always easy. Sydney navigated tough conversations, the establishment of high standards of conduct, and the expectations demanded of all members. She got push back. She listened. She approached her work with civility and grace, but also with an eye toward making her sorority better.

Her nominator is the advisor to Sydney’s sorority. She said, “Being a civil and courageous leader and leading a life of service means facing chaos with sound justification and compassion. Sydney embraced her roles with deliberate and thoughtful decisions, entirely focused on creating a sisterhood strong for those who are active and for those who have yet to join.”

Whether it is through her sorority, student organizations, academics, or in her free time, Sydney is selfless and sacrifices her time, energy, and resources to create a life that is more just and safe for all individuals.

Her goal is to serve and make a lasting impact on the world and communities around her. Sydney said, “This sounds like an extravagant concept, but it is really quite simple and just starts with the small everyday things like showing someone compassion or patience.”

Sydney is majoring in Building Construction in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies with a minor in Spanish. Through these two areas of study, Sydney hopes to create a workplace environment that is inclusive and safe, and she is helping to create workplace safety instructions in Spanish. Upon graduation in May, Sydney will be working as an Engineer for Clark Construction in Northern Virginia.

Sydney, we applaud your accomplishments and especially your commitment to listen and hear what others have to say. I am proud to present the Aspire! Award for PRACTICE CIVILITY to Sydney Cole.
