Smrithi Satish

Civility comes naturally to Smrithi Satish. For those who know her well, and for those meeting her for the first time, her presence is infused with courtesy, consideration, and kindness.
Smrithi serves as a visitor center ambassador for Undergraduate Admissions. For many prospective students and their families, she is the first Hokie they meet.
A nominator describes her as one of the “warmest and kindest students” the program has ever had.
In Smrithi’s role, she interacts with visitors who are both excited and stressed about the college search process. Her nominators said that her reassuring presence puts students and families at ease. She leads with authenticity and sincerity, answering all of their questions and always knowing when to share a relevant anecdote.
A nominator said, “After any interaction with Smrithi, I have no doubt that our prospective students and families leave with Virginia Tech as the #1 spot on their list of colleges.”
Once, in a Hokie Focus session, a prospective student realized she had previously spoken with Smrithi on the phone as a part of the visitor center’s outreach efforts.
“The student’s whole face lit up, and she was ecstatic to meet Smrithi in person,” said a nominator. “I have no doubt this is because the student’s previous exchange with Smrithi was distinctly meaningful, and that the student felt valued during that phone call.”
Smrithi’s compassionate communication style goes hand-in-hand with the deep care she has for others. In her work, she seeks input from her coworkers and is receptive to feedback. In challenging situations, she is patient and understanding. She never jumps to conclusions or points fingers.
“Smrithi’s capacity for careful listening and her interest in understanding are key foundational skills that enable Smrithi to practice exceptional civility,” said a nominator. “Her respectful way of interacting has enhanced our advising interactions and improved the Virginia Tech community.”
Smrithi is a senior majoring in environmental conservation & society and minoring in blue planet in the College of Natural Resources and Environment. A nominator noted that Smrithi’s field of study fits her commitment to civility, as it involves being considerate and mindful of the needs and wellbeing of both natural resources and people.
For representing Virginia Tech with courtesy and sincerity to help future Hokies find their way, Student Affairs is proud to present the Aspire! Award for Practice CIVILITY to Smrithi Satish.
