Patrick Corrigan
A student leader for Residential Well-being, Highty-Tighty executive officer, and 4th Battalion executive officer within the Corps of Cadets, Cadet Patrick Corrigan has straightforward insight on how to lead with civility: Listen. Care for others. Love your people.
“Patrick is passionate and dedicated to helping every Cadet find their place in the Corps,” said one of his nominators. “He consistently brings a positive, infectious attitude and a willingness to sacrifice and do good for his company and the entire Corps. His character inspires those around him to be their best.”
The nominator continued: “His relentlessly focused attitude has inspired those all around him. His ability to collaboratively find solutions in the most difficult situations provides a sense of confidence for everyone on the team. He has been an unyielding force that boosts morale and hope for the staff and the community.
“Patrick has helped our staff understand that courage can be displayed in many forms. His calm, confident, but humble approach helps us all.
“He is grounded in values and always willing to have hard conversations. He understands the effects of a decision and concisely communicates the risk-benefits. Patrick handles tough situations with grace and poise.
“He has grown and developed his compassion, empathy for others, and active listening, expanding on his skills to foster relationships and mediate conflict.”
Patrick credits inspirational leaders in the Corps for essential lessons, including that leaders should be vulnerable.
In difficult conversations, he said, “No matter your opinion or the situation, listening establishes mutual respect.”
“Care for others,” said Patrick. “When someone gets an award, congratulate them. If you see someone sitting alone, ask if they want to join you. If someone comes to you with an issue, listen to them and check up on them. Small acts of caring can have immense impacts.”
Patrick said, “I have learned that respect comes from love. While a strong leader may need to set the example, be confident, and be organizationally inclined, the best leaders are the ones who love their people.”
Patrick plans to commission as a Developmental Engineer in the Air Force, obtain a master's degree in aerospace engineering through the Nonlinear Systems Laboratory, conduct Flight Test Engineering at his first Air Force base, apply to USAF Test Pilot School, and obtain his PhD in flight test engineering.
I am pleased to present Patrick Corrigan with the Aspire! Award for PRACTICE CIVILITY.
