John Fiorini
When John Fiorini came to Virginia Tech as a first-year student in 2019, it was not just to earn a degree, but to take advantage of all the learning opportunities and experiences he could.
John said, “I got involved in something new every semester. I took on new projects in student design teams, became involved with the Latino community, and learned about management positions. At every opportunity to get out of my comfort zone and try something new, I have made it a habit to say ‘YES!’
“I always like to jump and see what happens, because unexpected surprises come more often than you would think. Don't be afraid to jump off that high dive! You never know how big a splash you will make!”
His nominator recalled, “John stood out as a first-year student to me. He exhibited curiosity and thoughtfulness in his exploration of what it meant to be a new Hokie at Virginia Tech. He displayed many interests and an eagerness to participate and get involved. John continues to be a reflective individual, who seeks out support to work toward furthering his goals. He exemplifies to me what it means to commit to unwavering curiosity. He is always exploring new avenues and reflecting on his own development.”
To John, curiosity is “expanding your knowledge of the unknown by doing things you have never experienced before; chasing uncomfortable situations while remaining positive and framing everything as a learning opportunity, especially through the ups and downs; and accepting that the more you do, the less you know.”
John’s passion is spreading joy. He said, “I love to make people laugh and bring unlikely people together. Every time you interact with someone, you are opening up your universe to another person. You have the opportunity to experience a little bit about their perspective and their story -- sharing their thoughts, feelings, ideas, hardships, and dreams. I have met some amazing and inspiring individuals at Virginia Tech.”
John is also inspired by his family’s strength. He said, “The sacrifices of my family gave me all the opportunities I have today. Not everyone has the same opportunities I have, or the privilege to pursue higher education. I am eternally grateful. I feel it is imperative to be curious and take advantage of the moments I have, giving back in the process.”
John will graduate this semester with a degree in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Controls, Robotics, and Autonomy, and minors in Physics and Music-Technology. John’s hands-on experiences include serving as a Motor Controller Electronics Specialist on the Rocketry Team and an undergraduate researcher at the Center for Space Science and Engineering Research. John is also a member of the Virginia Tech Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers chapter. After he graduates, he plans to work at the John’s Hopkins Applied Physics Lab in the Space Exploration Sector on NASA projects, to further explore the nature of our solar system.
I am honored to present the Aspire! Award for COMMIT TO UNWAVERING CURIOSITY to John Fiorini.
