Jaela Tucker
By practicing civility with empathy and intention, Jaela Tucker has proven that kindness is contagious. She is a constant reminder of what is possible when respect and patience come first.
Her nominator said, “Jaela’s commitment to civility is evident in how she balances firmness and kindness, maintaining respect in difficult conversations, and showing consideration for the feelings and perspectives of others.”
As a student lead for the Housing Services residential experience desk, Jaela embodies kindness, patience, and respect. Though it is a high-pressure environment, her nominator said, “Her ability to de-escalate tense or emotional situations, such as handling frustrated parents or stressed-out students, helps create a respectful and solution-focused atmosphere.”
Jaela brings empathy to every interaction. There are stressful moments and difficult conversations that come with her role, but Jaela mindfully avoids expressing frustration in any way that might hinder productive communication, no matter how those she supports may choose to express their own frustrations.
Instead, with calm and respect, she asks clear questions to understand the root of a concern and then offers to help however she can. Her nominator said, “She approaches each situation with respect and care, carrying an empathetic awareness for the feelings that fuel the actions of others.” As a result, her patience and composure make difficult situations easier to herself and others.
Jaela regularly takes on extra tasks and responsibilities in her department, demonstrating dedication to her team and the work they do.
One of the tasks Jaela volunteers for is checking in on students who haven’t swiped into their rooms in a while.
This entails talking with the student’s roommate and other students to understand the situation and ensure the student’s wellness. The process requires impeccable interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills, and Jaela is always up to the task.
“Her skill in this role supports the wellness of individual students and models a level of composure and patience that exceeds the usual expectation for a student employee,” said the nominator.
Jaela’s civility has had ripple effects in her office and beyond. “Jaela’s Civility has a meaningful and calming impact on both individuals and the broader community she interacts with,” said the nominator.
“Other staff members mirror her calm communication style and seek her guidance, which improves the overall culture and effectiveness of the Housing Services Front Desk operation.”
Jaela is a senior majoring in construction engineering and management in the College of Engineering and minoring in Entrepreneurship: New Venture Growth in Pamplin College of Business.
For her commitment to creating a more civil and caring campus culture, Student Affairs is proud to present the Aspire! Award for PRACTICE CIVILITY to Jaela Tucker.
