C.J. Cotten

C.J. Cotten with Dr. Frances Keene

As a leader in the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, C.J. Cotten has “broken barriers and set an example for others to follow, showing that it is possible to be both compassionate and strong, while leading with integrity and confidence.”

C.J. has served as cadre in Echo Company, the commander of the corps’ Civilian Leadership Track, Commanding Officer of Hotel Company, and as a student leader.

A nominator said that C.J. strikes an effortless balance between fulfilling her responsibilities and uplifting others with her sense of humor and approachable nature.

“Her leadership style fosters collaboration and support, drawing upon the strengths of those around her while ensuring that the needs of every student are met,” said a nominator.

C.J. is passionate about making the world a better place. As she has shown through her example, sometimes courageous leadership is having the courage to step up and lead because you care about the people you want to serve, and you want to see them prosper.

C.J. said, “Courageous leadership means putting your people before yourself. And when you don't know what to do, you use your resources and gain support to help your people as best you can with what you know.”

In addition to C.J.’s empathy, care, and commitment to understanding, she is a fierce advocate for all cadets.

A nominator said, “As a woman in the corps, C.J. has pushed hard to show how women are just as qualified to lead as their male counterparts. Her influence has created a ripple effect, inspiring other women to step into leadership roles, challenge themselves, and believe in their own potential.”

C.J. supports Hokie Wellness, Cook Counseling, the Women’s Center, and their collective mission to improve mental health on campus.

During New Cadet Week last August, C.J. helped create a mental health station to acclimate new and returning cadets to training. She managed a network of case managers, counselors, and other student leaders, deploying them across campus as needed to ensure new cadets received necessary support.

A nominator said, “C.J.’s maturity and leadership are so exceptional that it is easy to forget she is a student and not a professional colleague.”

C.J. is a senior majoring in National Security and Foreign Affairs in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, and minoring in Leadership through the corps. After graduation, she hopes to help teach English abroad through a program with the Ministry of Spain before pursuing a master's degree in clinical counseling, education, or social work.

For her selfless commitment to helping her community thrive, Student Affairs is proud to present the Aspire! Award for Prepare for a Life of COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP to C.J. Cotten.
